PUBLIC NOTICES

Whitemud Expansion Project

If you live in Lynnwood it is hard to miss the major Whitemud Freeway rehabilitation project. Here’s a website that explains what’s happening.  www.edmonton.ca/transportation/quesnell-bridgeand-whitemud-d.aspx

Or you can contact Carole Cej at the Transportation Department City of Edmonton at 780-944-3727 for more information.

Whitemud:  The Whitemud project will create 3 through lanes with auxiliary/ramp lanes at interchange locations from 53 Avenue to 149 Street.  The project will eliminate the current 2 lane reduction between 149 Street and

53 Avenue. South of Lynwood the eastbound lanes will be widened by one lane to provide the 3 continuous lanes. This will allow for an increased traffic flow eastbound of 50%. The westbound lanes will remain the same.

149th Street Off ramp:  The ramp from Whitemud Drive westbound to 149 Street will be widened to 2 lanes. This will allow for an increased traffic flow northbound of 100%.

Lynnwood and Traffic Noise

Sound Issues:  While significant capacity for increased traffic flow around the Lynnwood community is being developed, no noise abatement measures are being planned for Lynnwood.

Laurier Heights: Laurier Drive will be receiving a sound wall along its perimeter to address sound issues. Laurier’s sound readings are only marginally higher than Lynnwood’s and are still below city standards for noise abatement (65 dBAs).

Lynnwood and Sound Abatement:  If you are concerned about increased traffic noise in Lynnwood please let me know so we can put forward a Lynnwood position on the issue at nancymacdonald@shaw.ca or call

780 484-1812. For further information you can contact Adam Laughlin at the City of Edmonton [Adam.Laughlin@edmonton.ca]. You can also contact your City Councillors Linda Sloan and Karen Leibovici at 780-496-8110 or e-mail Karen.Leibovici@edmonton.ca and Linda.Sloan@edmonton.ca

LRT Update

The City of Edmonton Transportation Department requested and received a third extension for the public hearings for West LRT Expansion. The new date is June 2nd at 9:30 am in Council Chambers.  In a letter requesting the extension, the Transportation Department stated that a number of new factors are being included in the analysis of the best West LRT route, including land use and intensification (increasing density) along the route, regional transportation planning initiatives and other broad city policy planning projects like the new Transportation Master Plan. Stay up to date on LRT development by checking out the website www.edmonton.ca/lrt-projects.aspx

or contact LRT Projects General Inquiries 780-496-4874 for more information.

Other Cit y Initiatives

Edmonton is undertaking two major planning initiatives – The Transportation Master Plan (TMP) “The Way We Move” and the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) “The Way We Live”. The plans, which try to envision Edmonton in 2040, set the framework for City decision making for the next ten years of development. The plans have received an initial review by Council and are to return for more review on April 23rd . For further information see TMP www.edmonton.ca/transportation/transportation-masterplan.aspx and MDP www.edmonton.ca/city_government/planning_development/planning/7386.aspx

or contact the Transportation Planning Branch at 780-496-1795. Hard copies of the documents are available.

The City has noted several priorities for the future including greater densification of Edmonton’s existing boundaries rather than encouraging greater urban sprawl, more walkable neighbourhoods, transit oriented development and sustainability.

For mature neighbourhoods close to the core like Lynnwood, this may mean more applications for multi family dwellings. The City is already looking at allowing more garage suites and basement suites to address the affordable housing issue and to encourage greater density in existing neighbourhoods. For further information see the City of Edmonton’s plan “Smart Choices” at www.edmonton.ca/city_government/city_organization/smart-choices.aspx

What are the Dog Gone Rules?

Are you uncertain what the rules are for walking dogs in the City of Edmonton? The City of Edmonton has very specific rules for dogs set out in the Animal Licensing Bylaw and the Parkland Bylaw.  Rules for dogs are in place for the safety of your community and the safety of your pet.

It’s pretty simple…

In the City of Edmonton, you must license your dog and you must clean up your pet’s defecation.

You can walk dogs on parkland so long as your dog is:

◊ leashed and on a trail

◊ leashed and on a boulevard

◊ leashed and in an area governed by signage permitting dogs

Unless at designated off-leash areas, dogs must be on a leash at all times.

How do you know you are walking on parkland?

Parkland means any property whether developed or not, owned, controlled or maintained by the City of Edmonton.  Any properties in your neighborhood that are intended for use by members of the public for recreation or general enjoyment – any green areas, groomed parks, naturalized roadway buffers, boulevards, river and ravine lands and community leagues– are parkland.  When walking in these areas, you must keep your dog on a leash and pick up after it.

For everyone’s safety and at all times, dogs must be kept at least ten meters from any playground, sports field or picnic site.  Your dog must be on a leash no longer than two meters in length.

Visit www.edmonton.ca/parks  for more information about dogs. For By-law information, call 780-496-2950.
